ITIL v3, published in May 2007, comprises 5 key volumes. There is a lot of confusion about ITIL, stemming from all kinds of misunderstandings about its nature. Proper software and hardware control ensures the availability of licensed, tested, and version-certified software and hardware, which will function as intended when introduced into the existing infrastructure. The discipline consists of a number of processes, explained in subsections below: ITIL Job Position ITSM is characterized by customer focus, or fusion of business and IT goals, and optimizing the cost/performance of IT services, thus ensuring IT dollars are spent on business needs.

The ITIL Foundation Course is a particularly useful experience for ITIL professionals. The business impact analysis evaluates the what-if scenarios to consider what might happen after a disaster.

Incidents initiate a chain of processes: Incident Management, Problem Management, Change Management, Release Management and Configuration Management (see following sections for details).
